Appeal following distraction burglary in Melton
Police are appealing for witnesses after a distraction burglary in Melton.
The incident happened on Saturday, April 11 at around 12.45pm in St Johns Court.
The 87-year-old victim opened his door to two men who said they wanted to check the water.
The victim let them in and while one asked him to turn on the tap, the other said he was going to get a spanner.
A short while after the men had left the flat the victim discovered both his wallet and purse, containing cash, were missing.
The first suspect is described as white, around 5'8" tall and broad build.
The second suspect is described as white, around 5'4" tall and of average build.
Detective Constable Lee Fowler, who is investigating the incident said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and saw anything suspicious. The incident happened on Easter Saturday. Maybe you were visiting friends or relatives in the area and saw two men acting suspiciously. If so we would like to hear from you.
"We would also like to hear from anyone who thinks these men may also have knocked at their door.
"Sadly there are people out there who try to con their way into your home. Fitting, and using, a door chain or spy hole to the front door will help you to check who the caller is before opening and if they cannot produce an official identity card then do not let them in. You can even ring the company they say they are from to confirm their identity.
"A genuine caller will not mind you checking their ID and most will be happy to make an appointment and return at a later date or time. If you are in any doubt contact the police."
Anyone with information is asked to contact DC395 Lee Fowler on 0116 222 2222 and follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer. When prompted key in his identification number 0395. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free*and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
