Detectives reveal how murder victim died

The man whose severed head was found in Asfordby died due to a knife wound in the back, detectives have revealed today (Tuesday April 14).

At a press conference in Hertfordshire Detectives from the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Major Crime unit confirmed the cause of death of the man, whose body parts have been found in Hertfordshire and Leicestershire since March 22.

It was also revealed that experts are working to create a clay reconstruction of the man's face in the hope that this will further assist officers to identify the victim. The head was discovered by a member of the public in a field of the A6006 in Asfordby near Melton on March 31.

The torso and other limbs have been found dumped in Hertfordshire.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Hanlon from the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Major Crime said: "Work to identify the murder victim continues. Officers have already eliminated almost 60 men from the missing persons database. I would like to take this opportunity to again appeal to anyone who may know this man from the description given."

A description of the man is as follows:

  • The man is believed to be of white, Asian or mixed heritage
  • He is believed to be aged in his mid 40s to early 60s.
  • The victim was of a large build and weighed in the range of 16 to 17 stone.
  • He had also suffered a fracture to his lower left leg which occurred between the ages of 10 and 25-years-old. The fracture was severe enough for the man to need a cast on his leg.
  • The man did not have any tattoos or scars from operations
  • 5ft 6ins to 5 ft 10ins tall. His shoe size is believed to be between a 7 and a 9.
  • The victim had two front teeth missing at the top. They are the front right tooth and the tooth to the immediate to the right of that. They are believed to have been missing for a couple of years.
  • He also has a skin condition which has caused discolouration in the pigmentation of the skin around the ankle giving a ‘bleaching' effect.
  • Examinations have concluded that the victim suffered from eczema which caused the skin to ‘scale.'
  • The man is believed to have suffered a fungal infection on his toenails. There is also a very distinctive feature on both small toenails which has meant they have discoloured and thickened and cause the nail to curl under the toe

Michael also added: "I would like to appeal to anyone who may have any information about suspicious activity around the deposition sites in Leicestershire or Hertfordshire any time from March 18. This is when we believe the body parts were left at the five locations."

The latest discovery was on April 11 when the victim's torso was discovered in a suitcase in a ditch in Gore Lane near Standon in East Herts. Detectives have also confirmed today (April 14) that this suitcase was the same make as the holdall in which the left leg was found in on March 22 near Cottered in East Herts.
