Leicestershire Councty Council Community Services

31 March 2009 Your views of our museums count!

Did you know there are over 50 museums in Leicestershire and Rutland?  Would you like to know more about what the public think of our museums?

In 2007, Leicestershire museums commissioned research to Leicestershire residents to monitor the views and needs of visitors and potential visitors to museums and these views are being used to inform of our exciting developments.

The survey, which is part of a twenty-year project to monitor trends, is the only known survey in the Country.  It is being carried out by Leicestershire County Council, to see how views and needs are changing and is used to inform about museum development. The twenty year project is due to be completed in 2011.

The survey results have now been published and are available for public viewing online at www.leics.gov.uk/museumresearch

Ernie White, Cabinet member for Community Services, says “We’re lucky to have a county that is steeped in culture and history.  Receiving information from the community along with support from organisations such as the National Lottery has contributed to several museum developments, which I am very excited about.

This survey is very encouraging and we are making many improvements to Leicestershire museums for people from all backgrounds and lifestyles”.

There are various museum projects currently underway such as a major extension at Melton Carnegie Museum, which is funded by a grant from the National Lottery.  The nationally important Hallaton hoard of Iron Age coins and other finds is due to open at Harborough Museum , currently going through a major refurbishment, is planned to open in Autumn 2009.  We are planning many more exciting developments for Leicestershire residents.

Many of our museums are free and you can find out about the heritage of your area including Romans, machines, motors, dinosaurs, science and the natural world.

The survey shows that there are more people in Leicestershire visiting our museums who have a disability or are of a differencedifferent ethnic origin than those nationally.
