Budding chefs able to tantalise taste buds with mouth-watering meals made from leftovers have taken part in an awards ceremony.
The 15 lucky finalists in Leicestershire Waste Partnership’s ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ recipe competition were guests of honour at Leicester College last Friday (13th March).
As part of a campaign to cut food waste, residents had been invited to send in recipes for using up leftovers – the top 50 will be included in a new cook book.
The event at the college’s Taste Restaurant involved catering students cooking up a storm in the kitchen, preparing the finalists’ dishes for a panel of judges to ‘deliberate, cogitate and digest’ before narrowing them down to a top three.
Top prize was given to Jennifer Rogers from Husbands Bosworth for her recipe for lemon and almond tart. Ten-year-old Louise Jones from Kibworth came second after creating 'scrumptious tomato soup and Simon Matthews from Melton's celeriac and bacon pasta gained him third place.
Anne Wood, Programme Area Manager for Hospitality and Food at Leicester College, said: “This is a fantastic campaign, particularly in current times, which we are keen to support. By encouraging people to reduce the amount of food they throw away, we can show them how doing this will save money and help the environment."
Dr Kevin Feltham, County Council Support Member for Waste, presented winners with awards on the night and said: "Supporting the national Love Food Hate Waste campaign is a great way to encourage Leicestershire residents to reduce the amount of food they throw away by storing it correctly, cooking the right proportions and using up their leftovers."
This is just one part of the Partnership’s Love Food Hate Waste initiative, being launched in support of a national campaign run by WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme).
Leicestershire households produce almost 3kg of food waste per household per week - this equates to throwing away 390 tins of baked beans every year. This food waste usually ends up going to landfill but around 60% of the food thrown away could actually be used.
