A week-long programme of events is being held to promote community safety.
Community Safety Week is being held from 16th – 20th March. It will focus on young people, alcohol awareness, crime prevention and road safety. Events are being organised by your local Community Safety Partnership.
These crime-busting partnerships are made up of organisations including the police, local councils, fire services and youth offending agencies. Each borough or district in the county has a community safety partnership which is devoted to tackling crime and increasing community safety by working together to share information and good practice.
The week has been put in place by Leicestershire Safer Communities Strategy Board which oversees and co-ordinates the implementation and delivery of common safer communities priorities across Leicestershire.
Each partnership has organised a programme of events which will focus on issues raised by the public and partnership priorities.
Members of the partnerships will be going out into the community to speak to the public as part of the week. They will be going into schools and public places to give people information on what happens in their area and how they can play a part in building safer communities.
Hinckley & Bosworth
Ron Grantham, community safety manager for Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council said: “We will be focusing on alcohol-related anti-social behaviour during the week. Reducing harm caused by substance misuse is a key priority for the partnership, which aims to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder as well as raising awareness of the negative impact on people’s lives and their health.
“One of the main complaints often expressed by our local communities is about young people gathering in groups, drinking alcohol and being a nuisance. The Partnership’s aim is to tackle these issues and at the same time help young people who may be, or are, vulnerable to alcohol misuse.”
Melton
Melton Borough Council’s community safety officer Kevin Quinn said: “We will be holding a number of multi-agency community safety surgeries in local community centres. These will give residents a chance to raise any concerns they may have about their neighbourhood and provide the partnership with an opportunity to promote some of its successful work.
“Members of the partnership will also be attending all community forums held during the week to ensure they hear as many views as possible.”
Blaby
Teresa Neal, community safety team leader, for Blaby District Council said: “During the week members of Blaby Community Safety Partnership will be out in the community at various locations giving crime prevention advice. The focus for this will be domestic burglary. Residents in specific locations affected by this crime will be offered additional locks and bolts to make their property safer through the ‘Home Security Scheme.’”
Charnwood
The Chair of Charnwood Community Safety Partnership and Charnwood Borough Council’s Lead Member for Community Safety Cllr David Snartt commented: "I would urge all residents who have concerns over community safety to attend the meetings in their area. Through the Community Safety Partnership, all partner agencies welcome feedback on the issues that are important to residents in reducing crime and the fear of crime in Leicestershire. Together we can make Leicestershire a safer place in which to live and work."
Oadby and Wigston
Oadby and Wigston Borough Council’s community safety manager Tracy Gaskin said: “The aim of the week is to deliver a partnership programme to raise awareness of the CDRP, and in particular alcohol awareness within the schools and Borough. Members of the public and young people will be provided with a bag of goodies including materials and leaflets on crime prevention and awareness, alcohol misuse, fire safety, road safety and personal safety.”
North West Leicestershire
Councillor Trevor Pendleton, portfolio holder for community for North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "The North West Partnership in Safer Communities is planning a number of events across the District throughout Community Safety Week. These include events for young people and celebrating young people and consultation opportunities in the Valley area.
“We want to talk to as many people as possible about community safety, what their issues and concerns are and what we and partners in the police and other agencies are doing to address these concerns."
Public meeting - Thursday 19 March
Leicestershire’s Safer Communities Strategy Board is also holding a public meeting – ‘Community Safety the Big Picture’ on March 19th from 5:30 to 7pm at County Hall.
This will give an opportunity for members of the public to find out more about the big decisions on community safety in Leicestershire and to put their questions to senior representatives from all the organisations working to make our community safer.
