Hat-trick for a Leicester family PC John Christie, PC Amy Christie and PC Carl Ball

PC John Christie, PC Amy Christie and PC Carl Ball

It's a hat-trick for a Leicester family after all three siblings have become police officers with Leicestershire Constabulary.

Thirty-year-old PC Carl Ball joined Leicestershire Constabulary in 2002 as a police officer. Just three years later his sister PC Amy Christie followed in his footsteps and finally, on February 13 2009, his brother PC John Christie was sworn in to the Force at an attestation ceremony at police headquarters.

They are all currently based in Leicester with Carl working as a local police officer at Hinckley Road Police Station, Amy at Spinney Hill Park police station and John at De Montfort University where he is studying for a Foundation Degree in Policing.

Carl, who has previously worked at Hinckley police station as a neighbourhood officer, said: "I always knew that joining the police would be a fulfilling career and I am a people person so I enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and helping them when they need it most. My brother and sister have quite similar characteristics so I guess it's understandable that we're all interested in the same career.

"John is now doing his degree at De Montfort University which was not available for either me or Amy when we joined, so it's really interesting to see how things have changed for new recruits with a much more academic approach to policing. He's obviously learning new things all the time and it's great that Amy and I can share our experiences with him.

"When I tell colleagues that my sister and brother now work for the Force they can't believe it. It's quite common for a son or daughter to follow a parent by joining the Force, but I think it's very unusual and quite an achievement that three siblings have all become police officers."

Amy joined Leicestershire Constabulary at 20 and has worked both as a general duty officer and a beat officer firstly working at Melton, Hamilton and finally at Spinney Hill Park. She said: "I went into the job with my eyes wide open because Carl had told me so much about it. I knew it wouldn't be like how it is portrayed on TV. It's a very rewarding and challenging job. The great thing about having my brothers in the Force is that if any of us has a bad day we can talk to each other about it knowing that the other person totally understands."

Twenty-seven-year-old John served with the RAF for eight years and then worked in Australia for nine months before returning to the UK and joining the police. He said: "It's strange because I feel like the youngster of the family as Carl and Amy are both experienced officers. I always wanted to join the police but at 17 I felt that I lacked the life experience and so I joined the RAF. I'm really looking forward to getting out there and doing the job and it's great to have the support of my brother and sister."

Mum Lesley Christie from Leicester said: "I'm really proud that all of my children have chosen a career that helps the community in such a capacity. I understand that their job can be very difficult and can put them under immense pressure so I support them at every opportunity possible."
