25 February 2009 County Council sets budget

A budget to help people through the economic downturn has been set by Leicestershire County Council.

At a full County Council meeting today (February 25), members approved the following measures:

· A 2.9 per cent rise in the County's share of Council Tax bills - below the inflation rate of three per cent

£8 million of efficiency savings, to help the Council cut costs and protect frontline services. This is on top of £21 million saved in recent years.

· Service improvements of more than £3 million, including doubling the Council's support for debt advice groups and providing £375,000 to help stimulate the local economy, through regeneration, business support and inward investment

· £21 million of extra investment in services, including an extra £4.2 million for adult social care

£88 million for capital schemes - mainly school building work and transport schemes - including design work on the Melton and Sharnford bypasses and refurbishment of libraries.

County Council leader David Parsons said: “This budget aims to help people through the economic downturn and move towards our aim of achieving zero per cent rises in Council Tax.”

A 2.9 per cent Council Tax rise amounts to a £29 increase in the County Council’s share of band D bills, to £1,037.

This would be funded by reducing the amount of money the Council sets aside to meet rising running costs, as inflation has been decreasing recently.

Final Council Tax bills will include precepts levied by the district and parish councils and the police and fire authorities.

Background:

The County Council's share of Council Tax bills:

Band A: £691.38

Band B: £806.61

Band C: £921.84

Band D: £1,037.07

Band E: £1,267.53

Band F: £1,497.99

Band G: £1,728.45

Band H: £2,074.14
