Double the amount of support is set to be given to Citizens Advice Bureaux in Leicestershire to help residents seeking help and guidance on debt.
A total of £100,000 of funding for the service is included in the County Council's budget proposals which will be finalised next week.
The money will also help develop services with the 'Clockwise' credit union who provide accessible sources of credit for residents.
This is one part of a series of measures designed to help people through the economic downturn which also includes:
- A 2.9 per cent rise in the County's share of Council Tax bills - below the inflation rate of three per cent
- £8 million of efficiency savings, to help the Council cut costs and protect frontline services. This is on top of £21 million saved in recent years.
- Service improvements of more than £3 million, including doubling the Council's support for debt advice services and providing £375,000 to help stimulate the local economy, through regeneration, business support and inward investment
- £21 million of extra investment in services, including an extra £4.2 million for adult social care
- £88 million for capital schemes - mainly school building work and transport schemes - including design work on the Melton and Sharnford bypasses and refurbishment of libraries.
The Citizens Advice Bureau service is a countywide network of independent charities that helps people resolve their money, legal and other problems by providing help, information and advice.
Currently, the service is seeing a large rise in the number of people looking for advice and help.
County Council Leader David Parsons said: "There are many people who are worried about rising bills and the threat of unemployment and a funding boost would enable more to take advantage of the invaluable help and support given by Citizens Advice Bureaux.
“We also want to support residents by keeping our own costs down and restricting a rise in council tax to 2.9%. We have successfully brought down the level of council tax increases over recent years with the ultimate aim of having a zero increase.”
The budget will be discussed at a County Council meeting next Wednesday (25th February).
