Photo Opportunity: A new short break service for people with learning disabilities will be officially opened by Tony Kershaw, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council. The event is taking place at 11.30am on 20th February 2009 at 21 Victor Avenue, Melton Mowbray.
The new service enhances independence and provides greater choice for individuals and their carers in terms of where and with whom they live.
The unit has been developed following extensive consultation with people that will use the centre and their carers. As a result of the consultation, the decision was taken to develop a new six-place residential respite unit for people in the Melton area wanting locally based short breaks.
The new respite unit consists of two semi-detached bungalow style units each accommodating three people that are linked by internal doors. This creates smaller more ‘ordinary’ living areas, allowing people privacy and personal space if they need it, but also has the potential for specialisation in one unit.
The respite unit complements the new integrated housing with support provision for people with learning disabilities being developed in partnership with Melton Borough Council and Leicester Housing Association
Tony Kershaw, Chairman of the County Council said:
“The opening of this new respite unit offers increased choice and support for people with learning disabilities and their carers and enables people to remain a part of their local communities. It is part of the County Council’s ongoing commitment to the modernisation of services for people with learning disabilities in Leicestershire, strengthening our links with local communities and our partners.”
