Cabinet Office
A new, lower Council Tax increase has been announced by Leicestershire County Council, to help people through the economic downturn.
The County Council is proposing to raise its share of bills by 2.9 per cent – 0.6 per cent lower than the figure announced in last month’s draft budget.
The 2.9 per cent figure is lower than the Government’s preferred measure of inflation, which stood at 3.1 per cent in December.
County Council leader David Parsons said: “We are reducing our proposed Council Tax increase, to help people through the economic downturn and in recognition of the recent falls in inflation. My Administration is working towards zero increases in Council Tax bills.”
Other key measures to support people and businesses through the economic downturn include:
• £8 million of efficiency savings, to help the County Council cut costs and protect frontline services. This is on top of £21m achieved in recent years
• Service improvements of over £3 million, including doubling the County Council’s support for debt advice groups and providing £375,000 to help stimulate the local economy, through regeneration, business support and inward investment
• A total of £21 million extra investment in services, including an extra £4.2 million for adult social care
• £88 million for capital schemes – mainly school building work and transport schemes – including design work on the Melton and Sharnford bypasses and refurbishment of libraries.
The 2.9 per cent Council Tax rise amounts to a £29 increase in the County Council’s share of band D bills, to £1,037.
It is being funded by reducing the amount of money the Council sets aside to fund rising running costs, as inflation has been decreasing recently.
The Council is still considering other possible changes to its budget, following the end of consultation on January 30.
The budget is due to be finalised by the full County Council meeting on February 25.
Final Council Tax bills will include precepts levied by the district and parish councils and the police and fire authorities.
