A revamped centre for older and disabled people in Melton is being officially opened this month.

Gloucester House has had a major refurbishment and extension to improve services for the 400 people who use the centre every week.

The new facilities include two meeting rooms as well as an extended room and disabled toilets. Leicestershire County Council has spent more than £300,000 on the work.

Gloucester House is managed by Age Concern and services are provided by a small team of dedicated trained staff, supported by a group of committed and well appreciated volunteers.

The day care service, previously based at Norman Way Day Centre, has moved into its new home in Gloucester House and is used by 100 people every week. The service offers a stimulating and caring environment for people to enhance their quality of life and provide a respite for their carers.

Gloucester House is used for a variety of activities, including keep fit, sequence dancing, Melton Flower club, Melton Vista group and carpet bowls. Every Tuesday there is a coffee shop and table top sales are held regularly.

David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care said: “Projects such as this one, which create new opportunities for people in their community, embody the vision for social care services for older and disabled people shared by the County Council and our partners.

“The partnership between the County Council and Age Concern Leicester Shire and Rutland has resulted in Gloucester House becoming a busy, happy and vibrant location which adds quality to the lives of everyone who takes part in its various activities.”
