A below-inflation Council Tax rise, a boost for services and major efficiency savings have been proposed by Leicestershire County Council.
The County Council’s draft budget proposes to increase the authority’s share of Council Tax by 3.5 per cent from April – less than the 4.1 per cent inflation figure used by the Government and well below the five per cent increase pensioners will receive next April.
This is the equivalent of raising the County Council’s share of band D bills by £35, taking the County charge up to £1,043.
Council leader David Parsons said: “Despite the credit crunch and major increases in our energy bills, we are proposing to protect key services to the community and reduce the increase in Council Tax bills compared with last year.
“I believe that, in the current economic climate, it’s only fair that the County Council works hard to keep its costs down.”
Key points of the draft budget include:
- A £20.7 million investment in services, including an extra £4.2 million for adult social care and an extra £1.7 million to deal with waste
- Service improvements of £2.1 million, including £300,000 to cut roadside grass more frequently
- £10.3 million of savings, including £8.6 million of efficiency savings
- £95 million for capital schemes, including £79 million of Government funding for schools and transport schemes, design work on the Melton, Sharnford and Kegworth bypasses, refurbishment of libraries and respite care in Wigston.
The County Council’s Cabinet will discuss the draft budget on January 13. It will be considered by the Council’s scrutiny committees before the budget is finalised by the full County Council meeting on February 25.
Final Council Tax bills will include precepts levied by the district and parish councils and the police and fire authorities. Their proposals are expected within the next month.
