31 December 2008 Make forums a New Year's resolution

A new round of community forums kicks off next month and residents are being urged to make a New Year's resolution to take part.

The meetings cover a huge range of topics and enable people to find out what is happening on their doorstep as well as give their views on issues important to them.

At the most recent forums, people heard from local councils, Leicestershire Police, NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland and others about transport, housing, jobs, loan sharks, roads, community health plus much more and had the opportunity to use voting handsets.

The 27 forums in Leicestershire also give residents the chance to learn about bigger issues affecting their areas, get answers to queries in a 'Question Time' slot and influence local decision-making.

The next set of meetings starts on 26th January and people are encouraged to go along and get involved - dates are below.

In Charnwood, they are called Area Forums and in Harborough, they are known as 'Have your say' meetings.

David Parsons, County Council Leader, said: "Community Forums are an excellent way for residents to find out what is happening on their doorstep. Everyone is welcome to attend their local forum and contribute to the debate."

For more information, please call 0116 305 7581 or go to www.leicestershireforums.org

Notes:

Community Forums are part of a county-wide initiative involving Leicestershire County Council, District and Borough Councils, NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland, Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Together partners.

21There are 27 forums across Leicestershire which bring together elected representatives across all tiers of local government - County, District and Borough and Parish, together with a range of other community representatives

Although they do not have formal decision-making powers, forums are important bodies of influence - there is a 'duty to respond' to actions recommended.
