17 December 2008 Troll Bridge is new landmark for Melton **photo opportunity – Thursday, December 18**

Melton school children have played their part in naming the town’s latest landmark – the Troll Bridge.

The bridge over Scalford Brook forms part of a £250,000 scheme, funded by the sustainable transport charity Sustrans and Leicestershire County Council, to improve walking and cycling facilities in Melton Country Park.

Pupil Isabella D’Angelo from Brownlow Primary School came up with the name the Troll Bridge while Annie Davis, from John Ferneley High School, designed the bridge’s eye-catching sign.

Both schools identified the need for safer routes to their school and the schools will benefit from the new paths and the widening of existing paths, which improve National Cycle Route 64.

New cycle signs promoting Route 64 and links to the nearby schools were also introduced as part of the scheme.

The paths will also open up alternative routes into the park for visitors and connect the town centre and residential developments to the north of the park, encouraging people to walk or cycle and leave their cars at home.

Dr Kevin Feltham, County Council Cabinet Support Member for Highways and Transportation said: “We hope that the new and improved paths will open up the park to people who haven’t used it before, and encourage people to make more journeys by bike or by foot, particularly children travelling to and from school.

“We are delighted the schools were involved in deciding on the name for the Troll Bridge – the children came up with some fantastic ideas and some great designs for the plaque.”

On Thursday 18th December at 2pm, Dr Kevin Feltham and the winning school children will cut the ribbon to open the newly named bridge (off Redwood Avenue, Melton Mowbray). They will be joined by Patrick Davis from Sustrans, Bill Forbes from the Friends of Melton Country Park, and the Leader of Melton Borough Council, Councillor Malise Graham.

Opening of newly named 'Troll Bridge'

Notes for Editors:

The names and designs were judged by representatives from the scheme’s partners Sustrans, Leicestershire County Council, Melton Borough Council, and the Friends of Melton Country Park.

The Leicestershire section of National Cycle Route 64 runs from Market Harborough to Bottesford. It is part of the National Cycle Network, which Sustrans works with its partners to develop and improve. Currently, the network covers around 12,000 miles.
