Photo opportunity: On Wednesday 10th December, Tony Kershaw, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, is launching a new project to help tackle anti-social behaviour at County Hall, Glenfield, at 12.30pm. The IMPACT project involves street-based workers meeting with young people aged 10-18 to stop rowdy behaviour, drinking and vandalism.
In April 2008 the project was given additional funding in order to expand to work in more areas across Leicestershire. Over the last 6 months the project has worked in over 20 towns and villages in Leicestershire, including Melton Mowbray, Loughborough, Broughton Astley and Hinckley. IMPACT Workers have worked with young people on the consequences of offending and anti-social behaviour as well as drug and alcohol use.
Initial findings show that in most areas where the IMPACT team has worked, there has been a significant reduction in incidents and calls from the public about anti-social behaviour by young people.
Jane Melville, Prevention Manager for Leicestershire Youth Offending Service said: "The project is about getting young people to think more carefully about their behaviour and the impact that it has on the communities in which they live. The workers are out on Friday and Saturday nights – whenever the issues are, to meet with young people where problems are arising.”
Byron Rhodes, County Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: "Leicestershire County Council is committed to tackling anti-social behaviour in our communities and is working to support young people and to take action to keep them out of trouble. The IMPACT Project provides us with the opportunity to do this.”
The launch event on 10th December seeks to share information about the project with our partners and celebrate some of the early successes of the project.
