18 November 2008 Learn how to avoid loan sharks

People in Melton can pick up advice on dealing with loan sharks next week.

At the Melton Town Community Forum, residents can find out what help is available and hear from Illegal Money Lending Unit, Clockwise Credit Union and Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

Staff and students from Melton Learning Hub will also be talking about their successes at the meeting being held on Thursday (27th November) at 7pm.

Local residents will also be able to to use voting handsets to help influence spending on top priorities.

Community forums provide a are a great opportunity for people to learn about bigger issues affecting the area, get answers to queries and influence local decision-making.

Anyone with a query about a local issue can also go along and and put it to officers from a range of agencies in a 'Question Time' session.

Steve Ward, spokesman for the Public Protection Project Team - Illegal Money Lending Unit, said: "Using loan sharks can ruin people's lives. The unit will prosecute loan sharks to the full letter of the law. We can support the victims by referring them to legal forms of credit. In the case of loan sharks, there will often be individuals on the estate who are known to lend money without too many questions asked.

"Remember the person lending the money is never the person who collects the money when you can not pay. We want people to know they have other options.”

The meeting will be at 7pm on Thursday, 27th November at Sysonby Street Children's Centre, Sysonby Street, Melton, LE13 0LP and is open to people living in Melton town centre flats, Fairmead, Egerton or residential outskirts and the Craven, Dorian, Egerton, Newport, Sysonby or Warwick wards.

For more information about this forum please contact Richard Downing on 0116 305 5823 or go to www.leicestershireforums.org

Melton West and Parishes Community Forum will take place on Thursday, 4th December, 7pm, at Kirby Bellars Village Hall.

Notes:

Community Forums are part of a new county-wide initiative involving Leicestershire County Council, District and Borough Councils, NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland, Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Together partners.

There are 27 forums across Leicestershire which bring together elected representatives across all tiers of local government - County, District and Borough and Parish, together with a range of other community representatives.

Although they do not have formal decision-making powers, forums are important bodies of influence - there is a 'duty to respond' to actions recommended.
