Off licenses in Melton Mowbray are tested in run up to Christmas
Police and Trading Standards in Melton have been ensuring off licenses in the Borough aren't selling alcohol to the under 18s as part of their Christmas crime prevention campaign.
On Friday 12 December 2008 police officers, and Enforcement Officers from Leicestershire Trading Standards, visited 10 off licenses across three beat areas. They were accompanied by a 16 year old test purchaser who was told to give her true age if she was asked for identification.
Three of the ten off licenses failed. On all three occasions an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice was given to the person who sold the alcohol.
Sergeant Lee Morris from Melton Mowbray Local Policing Unit, said; "As part of our campaign to reduce alcohol fuelled crime and disorder in the run up the Christmas we are checking that licensed premises are abiding by the law and refusing to sell alcohol to the under 18s.
The link between underage drinking and anti-social behaviour, such as criminal damage, vandalism and graffiti, is well documented and if we can ensure that young people can't buy alcohol then that should reduce incidents. I am disappointed that three of the ten off licences failed. The owner of the failing stores will now receive a letter reminding them of their responsibilities and need to train their staff to ask for identification. The message is clear, you must check the age of the person before you sell them alcohol."
"I hope this operation will remind license holders of the consequences of failing to uphold the law, if any of them are caught breaking the law again they will be subject to a license review and if they do it for a third time they could lose their license altogether."
"We will be carrying out further test purchasing operation at both off licenses and pubs in the future."
