The police in Melton Mowbray are teaming up with staff at a bike shop in an effort to reduce bike thefts in the town.
Staff at Halfords on Norman Way will be offering free bike marking kits to people who buy a bike from the store for Christmas. The bike will have a unique identity number and a contact number for bikeregister.com put on its frame. Bikeregister.com is a secure national database containing the bikes details which means that, if it is stolen and recovered by the police, it can easily be returned to its owner.
The buyer will also be given an Ownership Document which is a Log Book that provides proof of ownership.
PC 234 Nigel Brown, one of the town centre beat officers, said; "Thieves hate marked bikes and one that is linked to a national database is even more unattractive. We have seen an increase in bikes thefts since the beginning of April and know that bikes are a popular Christmas present so we thought that it made sense to work with the local bike store to offer a registration and marking scheme.
"The best way to keep your bike to safe is to always lock it to something secure using a good quality lock even if it's in your back garden or kept at the side of your house. Never ever leave a bike unlocked even for a few minutes."
The first 200 bikes packs will be free of charge and will be given out on a first come first serve basis, another 200 packs will be available at a subsidised price. They have been paid for by the Melton Community Safety Partnership.
Geoff Garner, the Manager of Halfords, said; "Halfords in Melton Mowbray are pleased to support the local police in this initiative. We always encourage customers to think about security and safety when we sell a bike but this initiative goes one step further and offers a service that should help to reduce bike thefts."
