A joint investigation has been launched following a serious fire at a supermarket in Oakham.
Officers were called to the Co-Op store on Burley Road in Oakham at around 12.10am today (Tuesday July 29) by the Fire Service.
The fire has caused extensive damage to the premises and is being treated as suspicious. A joint investigation is now being carried out by police and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service.
DC Pete Martin from Melton CID said: "We are carrying out an investigation into the cause of the fire in conjunction with fire investigators from the Fire Service.
"The investigation is in its very early stages and we are trying to determine the circumstances leading up to the fire starting.
"We are appealing to anyone who has any information or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area of the Co-op store after it closed at around 9pm last night to please get in touch with us immediately. You may have noticed something that at the time appeared insignificant, but could prove vital to this investigation."
Burley Road was closed for several hours while the Fire Service tackled the blaze. It was re-opened at approximately 11.30am although fire crews and officers from Leicestershire Constabulary remain at the scene.
Anyone with information is asked to contact DC 385 Pete Martin at Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 0385.
