Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal road collision in which six people died.
The incident happened at 1.54am today on the A607 about a mile south of Melton town centre. It involved a black Ford Mondeo and a lorry.
The driver, a 23-year-old man, died in the collision along with a 19-year-old man, an 18-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman and an 18-year-old woman. A further woman also died. Her age is not yet known. They are all believed to be from the Leicestershire area. They have not yet been formally identified.
A 48-year man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released with no further action and is receiving treatment at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
The road remains closed while an investigation into the cause of the collision is carried out and the vehicles are recovered.
The A607 is expected to be closed for most of the day. Diversions are in operation and motorists traveling in and around the town should expect delays.
Sgt Simon Adkin from the road policing unit said: "The black Mondeo was travelling towards Leicester and the lorry was travelling in the opposite direction. We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident and saw either of these vehicles beforehand to get in touch."
