Information on Melton

A police officer based at Melton Mowbray has been named Leicestershire Constabulary's Student Officer of the Year 2008.

PC 4594 Shea Wakelin was chosen by a panel of people including the Deputy Chief Constable, the Police Federation and Superintendents Association.  The award recognises the work and effort put in by student officers as they progress through their first two years of service and is based on evidence of policing skills.

The officers are judged under a number of categories such as team working, resilience, problem solving, effective communication, community and customer focus and respect for race and diversity.

Twenty two year old Shea joined Leicestershire Constabulary 18months ago and has been in her current role in Melton for the last 12 months.   She was nominated for the award by her Tutor, Sergeant Lee Morris.  In his submission to the award panel he included comments from another Sergeant, who said, "PC Wakelin has demonstrated 100% commitment within everything she has undertaken. All that she has been involved with has been 1st rate," and another officer from the Force's ANPR Team said, "For an officer of only 12 months service, you performed better than some officers with much longer service than you, and you have been one of the best student officers the ANPR team have had on an attachment."

The application was endorsed by the LPU Commander, Inspector Nigel Peters, who said; "I have read the comments of Sergeant Morris and fully endorse them. He describes an officer who is committed, courageous, dedicated and professional with a work ethic that is inspiring to all around her. This officer's name has come to my attention on a number of occasions over the previous months for reasons that are always complimentary. Constable Wakelin has, through her own endeavour, made an impressive start to her career impressing experienced officers around her at an early stage.  She needs to be very proud of her achievements to date. I have no hesitation in supporting this application."

Three student officers were put forward, one from each area, and PC Wakelin, based at Melton Mowbray on the North was selected as the winner.

PC Dave Grenz, Chair of the Federation Joint Branch Board said; "As usual, this was a very difficult decision to make.  We had three excellent candidates, but felt that Shea stood out as a really good patrol officer showing tenacity and an ability to adapt her approach to different situations."

Shea will be invited to receive the Harris Cup from the Chief Constable in August and will be put forward as the Force's candidate for the Janes Police Review Student Officer of the Year 2008.

On hearing the news that she had won, Shea said she was very surprised, "I was completely shocked to be honest but I felt quite proud because it felt like a real achievement.  When I got home and told my partner I questioned why I had won because I didn't think I'd done anything outstanding.  I was a Special before I became a regular officer and I loved it so much I was doing 160 hours a month and gave up my full time job.  I was really thrilled to get through the selection process and become a regular officer.  I think I enjoy it so much because I find it really easy to talk to people and that has helped me tremendously."

The panel recognised the achievements of the other two candidates - PC Tulay Kaplankiran from Beaumont Leys and PC Kieron Harriman from Hinckley as ‘highly commended.'  They will also receive certificates from the Chief Constable.
