Leicestershire cycle training has been officially recognised with a national accreditation.
The County Council’s Bike4Life training has been awarded ‘Bikeability Status’ by the national Cycle Standards Training Board.
‘Bike 4 Life’ is today’s version of the old cycling proficiency schemes, and is offered through local schools to all children in the County.
Each year in Leicestershire, nearly five thousand children aged between 7 and 14, receive cyclist training through the courses.

Mr Tony Kershaw, Chairman of the County Council said: “Cycling gives children wider travel choices and is extremely healthy. The County Council places high priority on giving children the necessary skills to cycle more safely and provides knowledge which they will retain throughout life.
“We are delighted that our cycle training courses have been credited with the national Bikeability Status, reinforcing the fact that the Council’s Bike 4 Life training is run to an extremely high standard.”
Road Safety Tutors who teach the courses are trained to national standards set by the Cycle Standards Training Board.
Many schools who participate in the cycle training programme have made Bike 4 Life a regular feature in their curriculum, often as part of their School Travel Plans.

For more information on Bikeability, visit http://www.bikeability.org.uk/ or for details of Bike 4 Life courses, contact Loraine Harris, Road Safety and Travel Awareness Officer at the County Council on 0116 305 7229 or visit http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/highways/road_safety_traffic_mgmt.htm
