Plans for the new state of the art £15 million John Ferneley High School in Melton have been given the go ahead. This is just one of the major projects that forms part of the County Council’s pioneering £45 million investment to improve education in Melton and the Vale of Belvoir.
The new school will have a whole range of new facilities including science and design laboratories, classrooms, dining and assembly halls. It will also incorporate all the latest environmental features including a wind turbine, rainwater recycling system and energy efficient heating and lighting. As a further incentive, the County Council secured a grant from the government of £368,500 to reduce carbon emissions at the school by more than 60%!
The design of the school will also maximise natural daylight and ventilation and the school grounds will encourage bio-diversity by using recycling schemes and having allotments on site.
The new school will be built to the north of the existing John Ferneley High School, allowing the current school to operate during construction. Work on the new building will begin in September and should be completed by spring 2010. Parents and prospective pupils will have the opportunity to view the plans as part of a series of open events for new school admissions to be held at the school at the end of September.
From September this year the school will offer 800 places for pupils aged 11-16 years.
Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for the Children and Young People’s Service, said:
“This is great news for Melton. The new school will be absolutely superb and will give pupils the high standard of education that they deserve. The new building will be a fine example of modern design and will bring education in Melton right into the 21st Century. I look forward to it being completed.”
