Six organisations across Leicestershire are celebrating after being awarded a total of £6828 from the East Midlands Airport Community Fund.
The Community Fund, established in 2002 was designed to award funding to a range of initiatives that aim to bring lasting benefit to the communities around the Airport.
The Community Fund Management Committee meets six times a year. At the latest meeting 24 applications were considered and 18 grants were awarded to local organisations throughout Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire.
Chairman of the Community Fund, Councillor Marie Males said, “It is wonderful to be able to recognise such worthy recipients. We continuously award grants to a huge variety of initiatives which fit the fund criteria, offering further support within their localities.”
This meeting’s recipients were;
Sutton Bonington Football ClubFunding for a new reserve team kit and a pitch aerator1000East Midlands Regional Netball AssociationEquipment and t-shirt funding for a disability awareness event called “Breaking the Barriers” at Loughborough University in September750Ravenstone Youth Football ClubFinancial donation to allow the purchase of rain jackets and match kits for this recently formed club1000Loughborough Carillon Cricket ClubAllowing the purchase of 2 portable cricket mats for training and a metal shed for their continued storage1578Ratcliffe on the Wreake Village Hall CommitteeEnabling the provision of 12 large and 6 medium sized village hall tables to support the many events that take place within the hall1500The New Quorndon Shakespeare CompanyAiding the production of theatrical productions through funding costume materials, special effects equipment, a make-up kit and a ‘talk back’ system facilitating liaison between members of the production team1000Total 6828Michael Ellwood, Chairman of Ravenstone Youth Football Club said: "The Ravenstone Youth Football Club is a new organisation, using the limited playing fielcilities offered by the Parish Council. The grant donated to us by the East Midlands Airport Community Fund will ensure that despite this, the teams can play competitively in their own kit, creating a real sense of pride."
Mick Wells, Representative of the Ratcliffe on the Wreake Village Hall Committee said: "The facilities within Ratcliffe on the Wreake village hall have been in decline over the past few years resulting in less activities taking place here. Thanks to the generous grant from the East Midlands Airport Community Fund for the purchase of new village hall tables, we will now be able to offer an extended range of events in the hall, once full renovation has been completed."
Since the scheme was established six years ago, over 350 projects have received awards. The Community Fund consists of an annual donation by the airport; this contribution has increased to 50,000 since inception. In addition to the airport’s annual donation, proceeds from fined aircraft are also passed to the independently administered Community Fund. These fines are from aircraft that do not comply with the airports stringent noise procedures. The Noise Penalty Scheme was first introduced in 2002; the scheme’s main aim is to set challenging but achievable noise limits for aircraft operating from the airport at night. The fining regime has been devised to act as a deterrent, not an income generator.
The Community Fund supports initiatives that demonstrate a lasting community benefit within a designated area of benefit. Priority is given to applications that demonstrate that they bring the community closer together through sport, recreation or other leisure activities, environmental improvement, heritage conservation, environmental education or those that encourage and protect wildlife.
Councillor Marie Males added: “We encourage groups from all areas of the Community Fund area of benefit to apply for grants. The scheme is open to a wide variety of initiative types and it is a pleasure to support them.”
