The biggest ever programme of events around Leicestershire and Rutland has been organised to celebrate National Archaeology Week from 12th to 20th July.

The programme for Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology Week is now available from libraries, museums and on the internet. This year’s programme is packed with events around the two counties that will reveal a huge amount of local history. Main events include ‘The Romans Revealed’ at Jewry Wall Museum on Saturday 12th, ‘Dark Age Donington’ at Donington le Heath Manor House on Sunday 13th, and ‘Step Back in Time’ at Beacon Hill on Sunday 20th, but there will also be guided walks at Grace Dieu Priory, Burrough Hill, Belton, Great Bowden, Papillon Hall and the Welland Valley; talks at Charnwood Museum, Bosworth Battlefield Centre,Melton Carnegie Museum, Donington le Heath Manor House,Hinckley Museum,: site open days at Swannington and Hinckley; and displays and events at Ashby Museum, Rutland County Museum, The Old Rectory Museum Loughborough, Great Easton and Hallaton. In all there will be 27 events.

Mr Ernie White, Lead Member for Community Services , said “This is a real partnership with the County, City, Rutland and all the main archaeological groups in the two counties involved in planning and executing the week, which is part of National Archaeology Week co-ordinated by the Council for British Archaeology. I am delighted that, once again, the Week is bigger and better than ever and we hope this will encourage more people to join local groups and get involved in local archaeology ”

Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology Week runs from July 12th to the 20th. Leaflets are available at libraries, museums and tourist information centres or on the net at www.leics.gov.uk/leicestershire_archaeology_week.
