Leicestershire County Council’s Museums are celebrating the recent news that there has been a major increase in visitor numbers in the last 12 months.
Figures just released show that children in school groups visiting all the museum sites have increased by well over 20% compared to the same period in the previous year.
Adult visitors to Snibston and to Charnwood Museum in Loughborough are also up by over 20%. The new Battlefield Centre that opened at Bosworth in December 2007 is also doing well and is likely to exceed targets for its first year of operation.
The increase is attributed to investment in museums by the County Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and from other sources.
The new Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre, gallery improvements at Charnwood Museum in Loughborough and a continuing menu of school programmes, temporary exhibitions and events through 2007 have been achieved in partnership with Renaissance East Midlands and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The future also holds exciting developments as well - at Harborough Museum with the nationally important Iron Age treasure due to be displayed in 2009, followed by Melton Carnegie Museum’s extension with new displays on rural issues.
Mr Ernie White, Cabinet Lead Member for Community Services said: “This is good news – last year included the story of slavery, Gypsies and Travellers in Leicestershire, lacemakers at Loughborough, archaeological finds from all over the county as well as the famous day in 1485 when Bosworth saw a king die and a new, Tudor dynasty born. We are absolutely delighted with the visitors responses. Keep coming!”
- Visit Snibston for a fantastic array of children’s activities
- Horse around the horse exhibition at Melton Carnegie Museum – and why not combine with shopping on Melton Mowbray’s Tuesday market day.
- Step back in time at Donington le Heath Manor House and enjoy tea in a rustic setting
- Visit Harborough Museum and its local heroes
- Visit Charnwood Museum ain Loughborough and join in the big knitting workshops or for some Zoolab adventures.
- Visit Bosworth and re-live a turning point in history
