Information on Melton

A new ‘no cold calling zone' is being launched in Asfordby in Melton Mowbray today (Monday 28 April 2008) to reduce the chance of residents being targeted by distraction burglars, rogue traders and casual callers.

The zone covers Burnaby Place in the village.  The Community Initiatives Co-ordinator for Melton, Geoffrey Parkinson, wrote to, and then visited, 36 houses in the road and 35 of them have signed up to the scheme.

A ‘No Cold Calling Zone' is a designated area where residents decide they no longer want traders calling at their homes without an appointment.  It is designed to discourage distraction burglars, people who use high pressure sales techniques and rogue traders.  There have been two distraction burglaries in Burnaby Place in the last two years.

The zone is marked using street signs at the entrance and exit to the zone and residents are issued with an information pack from Leicestershire Trading Standards Department explaining how to say no to unwanted callers. The pack also includes window stickers, useful leaflets and contact telephone numbers. The sticker is meant to be stuck on a window at the front of the house and says, "Doorstep sellers BEWARE. You are not welcome here.  Police and Trading Standards will be notified."

The Community Initiatives Co-ordinator for Melton, Geoffrey Parkinson, said; "We have just launched a similar scheme in Bottesford and our consultation with residents in Asfordby told us that they were also worried about cold callers.  Setting up a scheme like this is designed to reassure people and give them the confidence to say ‘no' to unwanted doorstep callers and raise awareness about crime reduction.  We also hope it will deter those people who prey unscrupulously on the elderly and vulnerable from entering the area."

PC 1235 Martin Taylor said; "If someone unexpected knocks at your door then they will not mind you asking for identification if they are genuine.  Always put your chain on the door and, if necessary, shut it while you check their identity with the company they claim to be from.  The most important thing to remember is that there is no such thing as the water board and utility companies will not send representatives to your house to check your equipment.  If you are in any doubt, you should call a neighbour or dial 999."

For more information about ‘No cold calling zones,' please contact Geoffrey Parkinson, the Community Initiative Co-ordinator at Melton Police Station on Leicester (0116) 2222 222 ext 4571.
