Sixteen Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Groups in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland have been presented with awards by Leicestershire Constabulary for their contribution towards neighbourhood policing and the local community.
The winners of the first ‘Making a Difference' awards were presented with certificates signed by the Chief Constable at the Leicestershire & Rutland County Neighbourhood Watch Annual General Meeting held at Force Headquarters in Enderby last night (Wednesday April 23). The top five nominees also received cheques for £100 to help them continue their valuable work in their neighbourhoods.
The award recognises partnership working between a local Neighbourhood Watch group, local police officers and the neighbourhood policing team to identify and deliver a solution to a local problem or issue. Neighbourhood Watch schemes were invited to submit nominations detailing the problem or issue in their neighbourhood, how it was tackled, what partners were involved, who benefited from their actions and how the results are being maintained.
Bob Scott, Partnership Manager at Leicestershire Constabulary said: "The initiatives submitted for consideration for this first round of awards clearly show the added value that neighbourhood watch members can provide to neighbourhood policing.
"The unique contribution to community safety from Neighbourhood Watch members is important to Leicestershire Constabulary. These awards are a way of showing our appreciation of their valuable assistance and a demonstration of our continued support for Neighbourhood Watch."
Certificates were presented to Andrew Corbett from Syston NHW; Graham Davies from Burbage NHW; Sheila Jones from Thurnby Bushby Scraptoft NHW; Mary Elizabeth Parkes from Friar Lane NHW; Alex Ritchie from Markfield NHW; and John Denton, Lynda Gurr, Mary Hewitt, Pauline Pettitt and Sue Watson all from North West Leicestershire NHW and Police Volunteers.
Certificates and £100 cheques were presented to Carole Blackburn from Welford Road local policing unit NHW Police and Community Support Group; David French from Great Bowden village NHW; Brian Kelk from Bottesford and North Belvoir Vale NHW; Marion Vincent MBE from Rothley NHW and Alan Wade from Market Harborough NHW.
Neighbourhood Watch exists to:
Cut crime and the opportunities for crime and anti-social behaviour
Provide reassurance to local residents and reduce the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour
Encourage neighbourliness and closer communities
Improve the quality of life for local residents and tenant
