Libraries across the county are gearing up to receive high numbers of new joiners as part of the National Year of Reading’s ground-breaking ‘Join A Library Day’.
Leicestershire County Council wants people to join in celebrating all kinds of reading in all kinds of places and be a part of the National Year of Reading.
Supported by all libraries across England, the day is part of the National Year of Reading’s campaign to encourage parents, children and young people to join their local library.
For the first time ever, the National Year of Reading has developed a universal library membership form – a simple form that can be used to join any library in England. This is available from the County Council website: www.leics.gov.uk/nyr.
All people have to do is fill in the form and take it down with one form of ID to join up. Easy! If you can't get hold of a newspaper - simply walk into you local library and they will supply you with the form to complete.
In addition, members will receive the new Leicestershire Libraries Pack and the first 4,000 people that join their local library on Saturday will receive a free copy of the exclusive National Year of Reading’s The Ultimate Book Guide and a national library welcome pack. Librarians will also be on hand to advise on the range of reading opportunities available and on other events and reading projects taking place in the library.
Join A Library Day launches a diverse on-going programme of activity in libraries across the country throughout the National Year of Reading including reading festivals and author visits. Full details of what's going on can be found on www.yearofreading.org.uk
Leicestershire libraries have lots of free resources and a host of services to support reading including reading challenges, internet access, baby rhyme times, readers’ groups, and author events.
Ernie White, Lead member for Community Services said:
“We wanted to launch the Year of Reading with a reminder that we all have the right as citizens to read for free, and that our libraries are brimming with ideas - dangerous, fun and diverting, as well as educational and practical, that can change our lives. Libraries offer a place to read too – where you don’t have to buy anything! We are delighted to have kicked off the year with a groundbreaking collaboration – and we will continue to promote libraries for the rest of the Year.’’
