A nursery in Loughborough has pledged to stop using disposable nappies and switch over to real ones.
Shelthorpe Children’s Centre and Nursery, in Woodthorpe Road, Loughborough, is turning its back on disposables to help cut the amount of waste going to landfill.
Leicestershire County Council is supporting the centre in its bid to become disposable nappy-free, as part of Real Nappy Week, which runs until Friday.
To celebrate the going green, there will be an official launch at the centre on Monday, April 21. Coffee and cake will be served, and officers will be on hand with information and advice about real nappies and the alternatives available to disposables.
The Loughborough nursery will be phasing in real nappies during the next few months and, with the support of both parents and the local community, is committed to making a permanent switch from disposables.
Nicholas Rushton, Cabinet member with responsibility for waste management, said: Shelthorpe Children’s Centre and Nursery is making an important pledge to cut down on the amount of waste produced. Steps like these can make a real difference.”
Around 50 million disposable nappies are thrown away in Leicestershire each year. Most of these nappies end up in landfill sites and can take hundreds of years to decompose.
To find out more about real nappies or other recycling ideas, call the waste management team on 0116 305 5839 or go to: www.leics.gov.uk/real_nappies
