Police are appealing for information after a distinctive wafer tray was stolen from a church in Uppingham.

The incident happened between 8.10am on Friday March 28 and 8.10am on Saturday March 29 when the suspect entered the front entrance of St Peters and St Pauls church on London Road, which was open, and broke into the vestry at the back of the church.

The wafer tray is unique and identifiable. It is described as gilt silver with a white plastic inlay with 7 x 2 divider spaces. It is 3½ inches square and 1¼ inches deep. It also has a decorative crucifixion on the lid.

The tray is hall marked and inscribed ‘Presented to Uppingham Parish Church by the school to commemorate the period 1964-1965 when the school chapel was closed'.

PC Maria Pancholi, who is investigating the incident, said: "This tray is very unique and identifiable and is of great sentimental value to the church.

"I would like to speak to anyone who has any information regarding this incident or perhaps saw someone acting suspiciously in the church or its grounds between these times.

"I am also keen to hear from anyone who may be approached by someone selling an item matching this description or any businesses which deal in antiques who are approached by anyone selling such item."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 4319 Maria Pancholi on (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 4319. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
