Information on Melton

The police in Melton Mowbray have written to the town's major employers asking them to encourage their staff to become Special Police Constables.

Melton currently has five Specials but would like to double that by recruiting another five. Special officers can come from all walks of life and volunteer to undertake policing duties alongside regular officers. They will develop skills that are transferable and are highly valued by employers. They are also asked to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours a week.

A recruiting seminar is being held at Melton police station for people interested in joining the Special Constabulary.

It is being held on Wednesday 9 April 2008 between 7.00pm and 9.00pm at the police station on King Street.

The police recruiting team and Special Constables will be there to give first hand information about being a Special. They will talk about the role of the volunteer constable, the training involved, and their duties and responsibilities.

magnifying glassSergeant Johnny Monks, came up with the idea of writing to the town's major employers. He said; "Being a Special can really enhance your CV and help boost your confidence and communication skills which can be transferred into the workplace. We've sent a poster and some leaflets to the town's major employers to put up a poster in offices, canteens or other communal areas advertising our recruiting evening.

"Regular officers really welcome working alongside Specials. They make a significant contribution to policing our communities. You need to be over 18, have a positive and friendly attitude, be able to work as part of a team and be willing to learn new skills.

"I would encourage as many people as possible to come along on Wednesday 9 April to find out for themselves what a rewarding way of volunteering it can be."

Special Constables have exactly the same powers as Regular Officers and are issued with the same equipment. For this reason applicants are required to have certain standards of medical and physical fitness. A detailed information pack and application forms can be obtained by contacting the Special Constable's Recruitment Team on 0116 222 2222 Ext: 2062 or log on to www.leics.police.uk/careers.
