Helping children to get to school safely is a family affair for two sisters who are urging others to come forward and become a School Crossing Patrol.

Shirley and Judith Storer are amongst the Leicestershire’s youngest patrols at 28 and 34 and have both been doing their jobs at Ibstock Junior School and Ellistown Primary School for over a year.

Both sisters are keen to help the County Council’s recruitment drive to fill Leicestershire’s 47 vacancies for school crossing patrols, or ‘Lollipop People’ as they are affectionately known.

School crossing patrols provide an invaluable support by helping to make the roads around County schools safer for children and their families to cross.

Shirley said: “The best bit about the job is helping people out, especially the kids, and seeing them everyday and getting to know them all. It is a really rewarding position which I would recommend to anyone who could spare a couple of hours every day and get paid for helping out in their community.”

Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of the County Council with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “Shirley and Judith are two of over a hundred school crossing patrols here in Leicestershire who all contribute towards making their community a safer place to live.

"We want to get the message out to more people who might be willing to spend a few hours each week to help our school children.”
